update abstract finally done!!

“Meditation through Architecture” suggests architecture responds to Louis Kahn’s expression of silence and light and applies the idea to the meditation space in the urban setting; a place to enhance the activity and perceive fragile state of mind of the meditators.  The thesis is focusing on the relationship and transition of space between two extreme environments the close up person private space and chaotic exterior of urban setting.
The thesis is supported by studying Kahn’s concept of “Silence and light”.  Kahn’s interpretation of silence is the desire to create, and Light is the natural force that is expressed by shadow of the structure, material, and rhythm of the voids.  Silence is also served as an essential quality of the space in which meditation is required.  The transition of the threshold that provides a passage from the urban setting through space that is treated with Kahn’s expression of Silence and Light to an intimate and personal space for meditation. Here silence itself is the only thing required to help prepare the journey to the state of meditation.
The purpose is to create a place where people can have a quiet place to go and meditate and reflect on themselves, due to the stresses of daily life in the city.  Meditation is one of the simplest ways to help reduce that stress.  The architecture can also serve as a place where people can visit and walk through the space and recover their calm state of mind without having to perform the meditation activity.

The concept of this collage is about the flow out of the boundary.  I created the flow itself with the computer and ended with the sharp ages.  Then the flow keep continue out of the boundary itself and become other materials.   I felt that I didn't take as much risk in this collage as much as I wanted to.  But this is my first time using laser cut to do any of my project.   I thought I would ruin the laser cut work with salt and coffee.  But turn out salt and coffee alone would have been great.

Meditation through Architecture

Master of architecture candidate student at Wentworth
Instituted of technology, Than Dendoung, in his thesis, “Meditation
through Architecture” suggests architecture responses to
meditation; a place to enhance the activity and perceive that
state of mind of the meditators. He supports his thesis by
studying the quality of light, space, materials and urban context
of architecture. Dendoung’s purpose is to create a place where
people can have a quiet place to go and meditate and reflect on
themselves, due to the daily life in the city that can be stressful.
Meditation is one of the simplest ways to help reduce that
stress. The author wrote in formal academic thesis for anyone
interested in the subject.

How materials, light, texture can enhance meditation space?

Because in the meditation stage of mind is heighten into up much higher level than normal stage of
mind. Architecture’s responses have to be able to achieve at the same level, either to enhance the activity
or perceive that stage of mind of the meditators.

Because the meditator can experience perception of the environment higher than non-meditator,
often meditators go to places in nature where they can be alone by themselves. But in the urban context,
there aren’t many places people can go to meditate.

Because daily life in the modern day can be easily stress, and meditation is one of the simplest ways
to help reduce that stress. To have place where people can have a quiet place to meditate or go when they
want to escape from craziness of the city to reflect on themselves.

MANMADE VS NATURE
"Nature cannot be made by a human being." The definition of nature has been a truth since the ancient Greek philosophy... Satoshi Okada

This is my greatest architecture inspiration.  After watch this video , I can see architecture in another perspective.   It is so unreal
